About us

We accompany and train communities in Colombia to improve the welfare of equids and their environment.

Fundación Arrieros Colombia

We are a non-profit organization that has been working since 2018 with the support of the English World Horse Welfare Organization to improve the quality of life of working equines (horses, mules and donkeys), their owners and their entire environment.

We believe in the need to bring training and support to the communities and thus achieve great changes in these producers who in one way or another depend economically on the work they do with their equines.

Our pillars: Sustainable Development Goals, Human Behavior Change.

Committed to the welfare of equids

We encourage research in order to have relevant data and demonstrate the importance of equids within the Sustainable Development Goals, at the same time, demonstrating the problems that exist in each community and thus be able to try to reach a possible solution.

We are open to all research proposals from different public and private entities, seeking an impact for an integral wellbeing taking into account the Sustainable Development Goals, which are our mission.

We promote the improvement of the quality of life of equids.

In 2018, the World Horse Welfare Organization with CES University carried out an investigation that wanted to determine the economic dependence of families in Antioquia and their working equines. These data were relevant when demonstrating the importance of family economic dynamics and the need to support their owners, families, and communities through assistance interventions to improve the welfare of their working animals.

Due to the results obtained, the Organization decided to continue its work in Colombia and Carolina Jaramillo Gómez, Veterinary and Zootechnician, was summoned to create the legal entity. In 2020, the endorsement as a non-profit entity was obtained and the “Fundación Arrieros Colombia” was founded on March 9 of that year. Sergio Andrés Pizarro Cano, Zootechnician, joined in 2022 to support logistics and education programs.

These organizations, along with Carolina and Sergio joined forces to carry out this important mission and make a real difference in the lives of equines and their communities.

Get to know us

We know that behind our work there are people who dedicate their time and effort to make it possible. We want to share a little more about who we are and what moves us to work every day in this important mission.

Carolina Jaramillo’s commitment to equines and communities

I am Carolina Jaramillo Gómez, an animal science veterinary doctor, since I was little I had a great affinity for the rural sector, people and their environment, I chose my profession because I understood that in addition to the vocation I had to have the support of knowledge and experience to turn my dream into actions of social responsibility for the world of muleteers, understanding that they are the ones who have favored the development of our country.

As a professional career, I have been able to participate in initiatives organized by international institutions such as the University of Nottingham and national ones such as the CES University, which has allowed me to learn first-hand about the problems surrounding the health and well-being of equines and how this affects the economic dynamics, food security and social development of the communities. Thanks to Fundación Arrieros Colombia, today I can see that many of these social difficulties are beginning to be mitigated with sustainable initiatives.

Here I will continue to join forces to carry out this important mission and make a real difference in the lives of horses, mules, donkeys and their communities.

Sergio Pizarro and his commitment to Fundación Arrieros Colombia

My name is Sergio Pizarro, I am an animal science professional graduated from the University of Antioquia and passionate about equines thanks to my father’s legacy.

During my professional life I have worked in various fields such as poultry farming and teaching and I have developed some social and artistic projects at the same time; and it was in  2022 that I was able to combine social work with my professional life and the love I feel for equines by having the possibility of connecting with Fundación Arrieros Colombia, where I currently work and to whom I owe all my gratitude for allowing me to wake up every day loving and enjoying what we do for the well-being of equines and the communities where they live.
